After rediscovering a taste for electroacoustic composition in 2017 with L’accent du Midi, I continued along this path the following year. Almanach follows the twelve months of an imaginary year, like the one in the revolutionary calendar invented by Fabre d’Eglantine. By opting for this plan, I don’t really mean to celebrate the memory of the opportunistic and versatile agitator who was eventually guillotined with his friend Danton, but rather to symbolically sum up the diversity of sequences that follow one another in most of our lives, coloured by excitement or melancholy.
My year begins in the old-fashioned way in spring, in the month of Germinal, with the song of an American bird, the red mockingbird, which is renowned as much for the variety of its diet as for that of its stanzas. The following months also see a succession of timbres and rhythms of notable diversity, but where the zoomusicology is no longer noticeable. Each lasts two or three minutes, until the long winter of Nivose, Pluviose and Ventose. Naturally, it’s darker than we might have hoped after the summer of Fructidor.
