Notice
Areg for piano four hands was commissioned in 1977 by the Conservatoire de Romainville in the Paris suburbs, and premiered on June 10 of the same year by students from the Conservatoire, then on December 2 by Katia and Marielle Labèque.
A dune is a mass of infinite grains of sand, an erg is a Saharan landscape with a very large number of dunes, and areg is the plural of this Arabic word. Each note can be compared to one of these grains of sand. So there really are a lot of them in this short work, whose writing incorporates a certain tightly controlled randomness.
